ETA: Yes, you need a "visa" to travel to the UK from Europe now

New travel rules for Europeans heading to the UK are here! Starting April 2, 2025, European travelers will need to grab an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before heading to the UK. It’s not quite a visa, but it’s close enough! If you’re planning a trip and you're not from Ireland, here are all the things you need to know.

UK ETA in 3 steps: New UK ETA requirements for European travelers in 2025

The UK's new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital permit that European travelers will need to apply for before coming to the UK, like the Schenghen ETIAS. Starting from April 2, 2025, anyone from the European Union (EU), who doesn't need a full visa, will have to get this ETA to enter the UK.

How to apply

Apply UK ETA online. Requires personal info, passport details, a photo, and background questions. Process is quick, and most get a decision within minutes or a few days.

Purpose

The ETA is needed for short visits to the UK for tourism, business, short studies, or certain work activities. It’s not a visa and doesn’t guarantee entry. Border control will make the final decision on arrival.

Who is exempt

People with a valid UK visa, British and Irish citizens, UK residents, and travelers passing through the UK without entering don’t need an ETA.

This new system is part of the UK’s effort to strengthen border security. It’s similar to other travel authorization systems used around the world, like the US ESTA or the upcoming European ETIAS. The idea is to check travelers' details before they arrive, making it easier and safer for everyone.

Do I need ETA if I have settled status?

You do not need an ETA if: you have a visa, permission to live, work, or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status or right of abode), or if you are transiting through a UK airport without passing through border control (check with your airline if unsure).
