What is India e-Visa?

The India e-Visa is an official electronic travel authorization issued by the Government of India that allows foreign nationals to enter the country for specific purposes—without the need to visit an embassy. It is a fully digital visa system.

The India Electronic Visa is available to nationals of selected countries, including the United States, whose sole objective of visiting India falls into one of the approved categories:

  • Tourism (recreation, sightseeing, or visiting family and friends)

  • Participation in short-term yoga programs

  • Medical treatment (including traditional Indian systems of medicine)

  • Business purposes

  • Attending conferences, workshops, or seminars organized by Indian government entities

  • Accompanying an e-Medical Visa holder

However, individuals with diplomatic/official passports, UN travel documents, or those of Pakistani origin (including those with parents or grandparents born in Pakistan) are not eligible for an e-Visa. Instead, they must apply through the standard visa process at an Indian mission.
