Before you book your flight or start planning your Canadian adventure, there’s one simple step you can’t overlook — securing your Canada ETA. This essential electronic travel authorization unlocks smooth air travel for visitors from visa-exempt countries, saving you time and hassle at the airport. Here is how.

What is Canada ETA?

A Canada ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a document that allows travelers from visa-exempt countries to fly to Canada. It’s linked to your passport and is required for air travel only—not if you’re entering by car, bus, train, or boat.

Once approved, a Canada ETA is valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires—whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETA.

Who needs a Canada ETA?

There are four main types of travelers when it comes to the Canada ETA:

1. You need an ETA if…

- You are from a visa-exempt country

- You are flying to Canada or transiting through a Canadian airport

You do not need an ETA if you are entering Canada by land or sea.

2. You might be able to apply for an ETA if...

- You are from a country that usually needs a visa

- But you are eligible to apply for an ETA to fly to Canada

You still need a visitor visa if you’re coming by car, bus, train, or boat.

3. You cannot use an ETA if...

- You are a Canadian citizen (including dual citizens) — you need a Canadian passport

- You are a permanent resident of Canada — you need a PR card or PR travel document

- You are stateless or using an alien passport — you need a visa

If you once lived in Canada and think you lost your PR status, check your status. It might still be active.

4. You’re exempt from the ETA if...

- You are a U.S. citizen — just bring your valid U.S. passport

- You are a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. — bring:

- Valid Green Card or U.S. status proof

- Passport from your home country

Arriving in Canada with an ETA

Even with a Canada ETA, a border officer will decide if you can enter. Be ready to:

  • Show your passport

  • Answer questions about your trip

  • Provide any supporting documents (if needed)

You may also need to provide fingerprints, depending on the airport or if referred for extra checks.

Most visitors are allowed to stay for up to 6 months, but the officer may shorten or extend your stay based on your travel plans.

You must:

  • Tell the truth

  • Prove that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay

If you break the rules, you may be asked to leave and could lose your right to visit Canada in the future.
