The UK visa for Trinidad and Tobago nationals is set to become a new requirement and it may impact your travel plans. In this Global Law guide, we’ll break down what this means for you, why the change is happening, and the visa options available for Trinidad and Tobago nationals.
Yes, nationals of Trinidad and Tobago now require a visa to visit the United Kingdom. As of April 23, 2025, nationals of Trinidad and Tobago must apply for a visa to visit the UK, as they are no longer eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
This change was implemented due to a significant increase in asylum applications from Trinidad and Tobago citizens, prompting the UK government to revise its entry requirements. However, Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Dr. Amery Browne, described the UK’s decision as disproportionate in an interview with local media. He stated:
“This move is within their rights as a sovereign nation, but we do not see it as a proportionate response to what UK authorities conveyed to us, which was their observation that a relatively small number of Trinidad and Tobago nationals were misusing the UK immigration system by being processed for an ETA in the normal existing process and then suddenly applying for asylum after arrival.”
We have indicated our disappointment with the new visa requirement and will continue our consistent engagement with our UK counterparts. We are not of the view that regular travellers to the UK should be negatively affected by a relatively small number of persons who have been trying to abuse the British immigration system.”
The British High Commissioner, Jon Dean, stated that the decision aligns Trinidad and Tobago with other visa-required nations while maintaining strong bilateral ties. He emphasized the UK’s commitment to safe and secure travel and assured that visa applications can be processed locally in Trinidad and Tobago.
For Trinidad and Tobago nationals seeking to stay in the UK for purposes beyond short-term visits, several visa options are available depending on the reason for travel, such as:
Visa Type | Purpose | Key Details |
